Preparing Future Faculty

Under the leadership of Associate Dean Athina Markopoulou, the Graduate and Professional Studies office launched a monthly seminar in AY2324 for engineering graduate students (and postdocs and early career researchers) interested in pursuing and preparing for careers in academia. In our second iteration of the seminar (in AY2425) we will be expanding the content to include sessions on fellowships and applications, writing in general, time management, industry, etc, which are useful in early parts of the PhD.

Preparing Future Faculty Seminar Series

Are you interested in exploring a path to an academic career? Are you curious about what the faculty job actually entails?  Do you want to familiarize yourself with the academic job market and better position yourself for it? If the answer is yes to any of the above, you may be interested in our “Preparing Future Faculty” Seminar Series, offered for the second time in AY 24-25, building on the success of AY 23-24.  Please note that this is not a class for credit.

  • When: Second Thursday of every month, 3-4pm, throughout AY 2024-25. Light Refreshments at 2:45.
  • Where: ISEB 1200.
  • Who should attend: Ph.D students and postdocs affiliated with the Samueli School of Engineering, who are considering an academic career. Students at all stages of their PhD are welcome and can benefit from different parts of the program. For example, students in early years can benefit from sessions on writing, fellowships and how to do research, while students close to graduation can benefit from hands-on advice on preparing their application materials. If you attended some or all of the seminars last year, you are still welcome to attend sessions this year.

We hosted the first Preparing Future Faculty Seminar series during the 2023-24 AY. The seminar was hosted on the second Thursday of every month, 1-2pm, at the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB) 1200 Colloquia room. A diverse range of Engineering faculty, deans, and campus academic career office representatives attended and provided information to graduate students in panel and workshop formats. We will continue to offer these sessions in the future and we are excited by the interest Engineering (and other) graduate students and postdocs are expressing for us to continue these efforts.

Some of the topics covered in the first seminar:

  • Faculty Panel: Experiences from Faculty Life
  • Teaching-Focused Faculty Pathways
  • Academic Job Search Process: The Hiring Perspective
  • Writing a Research Statement
  • Writing a Teaching Statement
