There are combinations of ways graduate students fund their graduate education. Typically, students hold a combination support in the form of academic appointments, fellowships, and/or faculty training grants. Funding is coordinated at a department level, make sure to check in with your department for specific funding questions. Below you will find resources and information on additional or primary funding available to UCI students.
Types of Funding
Academic Appointments
The most common form of employment offered to graduate students in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering are Graduate Student Research (GSR) and Teaching Assistant (TA) appointments.
Graduate Student Researcher (GSR)
Students selected for GSR appointments in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering work closely with a faculty member in an ongoing research project in a lab overseen by that faculty member. Opportunities for a GSR appointment are plentiful as all of our faculty members require student assistants to further their research projects. The selection process is first completed by committees during the admissions process. Students are selected for appointments based upon their background, interests and technical expertise, and matched with the needs of the faculty. In subsequent years, students must seek out these appointments on their own by contacting professors in their areas of interest.
The GSR appointments vary and employment is offered between 25-49 percent time, involving a time commitment of 10-20 hours a week. GSR students receive a monthly salary as well as the payment of fees and tuition as a benefit of employment. Students who are M.S. and Ph.D. candidates may be considered for GSR appointments, but preference may be given to Ph.D. students. Professional Master’s students are not eligible to hold GSR positions.
Teaching Assistant (TA)
The Henry Samueli School of Engineering relies heavily on the support of TA’s for instruction. TA’s support faculty in undergraduate courses. They may lead discussion sections, grade tests, papers, and homework, counsel, and tutor students enrolled in a particular section of a course. Students are selected for appointment based upon the academic preparation, instructional needs of the department and the faculty. Service as a TA requires a time commitment of 10 or 20 hours per week. Quarterly fees are covered as a benefit of employment. International non-English speaking students must take and pass one of the English Proficiency exams for a TA appointment. The selection process for teaching assistants is first completed in committees throughout the admissions process. In subsequent years, students must seek out these appointments on their own by contacting departments directly. Students who are M.S. and Ph.D. candidates may be considered for TA appointments, but preference may be given to Ph.D. students. Professional Master’s students are not eligible to hold TA positions.
Fellowships
All graduate students are encouraged to apply for financial support through various fellowship and scholarship opportunities. Fellowships vary in amount and are an important source of funding designed to help students meet their educational and living expenses. Graduate and Professional Studies often receives announcements for fellowships, both internal and extramural, so please visit often for new listings.

Due to the competitive nature of the fellowship application process, it is essential to plan ahead. Students should allow enough time to identify fellowship opportunities and prepare application materials. The application itself is an important component of academic and professional development. The process of articulating research will help students enhance their research and prepare their credentials for future endeavors.
UCI’s Graduate & Postdoctoral Resource Center (3100 Gateway Study Center) holds funding workshop series that include information on how to apply for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) and to other training grants. The GRC also offers writing consultants to assist with proofreading of papers and grants throughout the year.
The NIH requires its principal investigators to report the use of Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for NIH-supported graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. See https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-14-113.html. Resources for the development of an IDP are available for both graduate students and postdoctoral researchers as noted below:
